New to GTA San Andreas? Get essential tips on leveling CJ's stats, driving, and combat. Master the Definitive Edition with our 2026 beginner guide.
Getting Started in GTA San Andreas
GTA San Andreas is one of the largest GTA games ever made with 3 cities, a massive countryside, and RPG-like stats. This beginner guide covers what new players (and returning players on the Definitive Edition) need to know.
Tip 1 — Level Up CJ's Stats Early
San Andreas has RPG elements — CJ can improve his stamina, muscle, driving skill, flying skill, and weapon proficiency through use:
- Stamina — Run and swim a lot early. Max stamina = infinite sprint.
- Driving/Flying — Do the driving/flying school missions. They unlock better vehicle control.
- Weapon Skill — Use the same weapon repeatedly. At "Hitman" level, you can dual-wield and move while aiming.
- Or use PROFESSIONALKILLER cheat for instant max weapon skill!
Tip 2 — Explore All Three Cities
The map unlocks gradually: Los Santos → San Fierro → Las Venturas. Each city has unique missions, vehicles, and properties. Don't rush through — explore each city fully.
Tip 3 — Use Cheat Codes for Fun
SA has the most cheat codes of any GTA game. After finishing the story, try these wild combos:
- ROCKETMAN — Jetpack is the best cheat in the game. Fly anywhere instantly.
- CHITTYCHITTYBANGBANG — All cars fly. Drive off a cliff and keep going.
- STATEOFEMERGENCY — Riot mode. Pure chaos in the streets.
