Every CS2 skin belongs to one of 8 rarity grades, indicated by color. Rarer skins are harder to obtain from cases and are generally more valuable. This hierarchy is the backbone of the entire skin economy.

The M4A4 Howl is the only Contraband-tier skin in CS2 history. It was originally released in the Huntsman Case but was removed permanently after Valve discovered the artwork was stolen from another artist. 🔢 Float Value — The Number That Determines Everything
Every CS2 skin has a float value — a decimal number between 0.000000 and 1.000000 that determines how worn the skin looks. This is the single most important concept for anyone interested in trading or investing.
Key Facts About Float
- Lower float = cleaner skin (less scratches, brighter paint, higher value)
- Higher float = more worn (visible scratches, faded paint, lower value)
- Float is permanently assigned when the skin is created (unboxed, dropped, or crafted via trade-up). It never changes no matter how much you use, trade, or store the skin.
- Two skins with the same rarity and wear label but different floats can have vastly different prices. A 0.001 Factory New is worth several times more than a 0.069 Factory New.
- You can check any skin's float using CSFloat or by inspecting the item in your CS2 inventory.

Not every skin can exist across the full 0.00–1.00 range. Valve hardcodes float caps (minimum and maximum float limits) into many skins. This creates surprising pricing dynamics that experienced traders exploit:
- AWP Asiimov — Minimum float: 0.18 (Field-Tested). It literally cannot exist in Factory New or Minimal Wear. A 0.18 FT Asiimov is the cleanest possible and commands a massive premium — often priced higher than many FN skins from other collections.
- AK-47 Redline — Minimum float: 0.10 (Minimal Wear). No Factory New Redlines exist anywhere in the game.
- M4A1-S Knight — Float range: 0.00–0.08. Only exists in Factory New. Every Knight ever unboxed is FN.
- AK-47 Vulcan — Float range: 0.00–0.70. Cannot exist in Battle-Scarred.
💡 Trading tip: When a skin has a restricted minimum float, the cleanest possible version commands a huge premium. This is critical knowledge for trade-up contracts — you can sometimes use cheaper inputs and still get FN outputs by exploiting the output skin's float cap.
🧬 Other Factors That Affect Value
Pattern Index (Paint Seed)
Some skins have random pattern placements determined by a pattern index (also called paint seed). Most skins look identical regardless of pattern, but a few have rare patterns worth 10-100x the normal price:
- Case Hardened "Blue Gems" — AK-47, Karambit, and Five-SeveN Case Hardened skins where the random pattern produces a mostly blue surface. Pattern #661 (the "Scar" AK) has sold for $100,000+.
- Doppler Phases — Knives with Doppler finish come in Phases 1-4 plus three ultra-rare variants: Sapphire (all blue), Ruby (all red), and Black Pearl (dark purple). These trade for 5-20x the price of normal phases.
- Fade Percentage — Fade skins vary from ~85% to 100% fade. A 100% full fade is worth significantly more.
