Where Do CS2 Skins Come From?
Every skin in CS2 comes from one of two sources: a weapon case (opened with a key) or a collection (dropped during operations or events). Understanding the difference is critical for trading, investing, and trade-up contracts. This guide explains the entire system.
📦 How Weapon Cases Work
- Cases drop randomly while playing CS2 (both Prime and non-Prime players)
- To open a case, you need a key — costs $2.49 from the in-game store (keys are universal now — any key opens any case)
- Each case has a fixed set of skins organized by rarity (Blue → Purple → Pink → Red)
- Plus a chance at a Knife or Gloves (the "rare special item" — Gold tier)
- The case spins an animation and you receive one random skin

The AWP Dragon Lore comes from the Cobblestone Collection, which stopped dropping years ago when the Cobblestone map was removed from the Active Duty pool. No new Dragon Lores can enter the market except through trade-ups from other Cobblestone skins — making even the Industrial Grade (Light Blue) skins from the Cobblestone Collection worth $50+ simply because they're trade-up fuel for a chance at the Dragon Lore.
The same principle applies to Norse Collection, St. Marc Collection, and other discontinued sets. Even trash-tier skins from these collections have inflated prices because of their trade-up potential.
🔄 Trade-Up Contracts — Climbing the Rarity Ladder
The trade-up system lets you exchange 10 skins of the same rarity for 1 skin of the next rarity tier from the same collection(s) you used as input.
How It Works
- Select 10 skins of the same rarity grade (e.g., 10 Mil-Spec Blues)
- The output will be one Restricted (Purple) skin from the same collection(s)
- If inputs come from different collections, the output can be from any of those collections
- The output's float value is calculated from the average float of the 10 inputs
- StatTrak rule: All 10 inputs must be StatTrak to get a StatTrak output. No mixing.

- Target collections with few possible outcomes at the next tier — this concentrates your odds on valuable skins
- Control float value — buy low-float inputs to produce low-float outputs (worth more)

Discontinued cases appreciate in value over time as supply dries up:

- Operation Breakout Case: Was $0.03 → now $3+ (100x)
- Strategy: Buy hundreds of the cheapest current cases ($0.03-$0.10 each). Hold for 1-3 years. If the case gets discontinued, its price rises as supply disappears from the market.
- Risk: Not all cases get discontinued. Valve can re-introduce cases to the drop pool at any time.
