Minecraft Beginner Guide — How to Survive Your First Night (2026)
New to Minecraft? Learn how to survive your first night with this beginner guide — tips on shelter, tools, and mobs. Start strong in 2026!
Welcome to Minecraft — Your First Steps
Minecraft drops you into a randomly generated world with nothing. No tutorial, no quest markers, no hand-holding. You have roughly 10 minutes before nightfall, when hostile mobs — zombies, skeletons, spiders and creepers — start spawning. This guide covers everything you need to survive your first night and build a foundation for the rest of your adventure.

⏱️ Minutes 0-2 — Punch Trees
Yes, literally punch a tree. Hold down the attack button on the nearest tree trunk to collect Oak Logs. You need at least 5-6 logs to get started.
- Open your inventory (E on PC, triangle/Y on console)
- Place logs in the 2×2 crafting grid → create Planks
- Use 4 Planks in the 2×2 grid → create a Crafting Table
- Place the Crafting Table on the ground and open it → 3×3 crafting grid
🔨 Minutes 2-5 — Craft Your First Tools
At the Crafting Table, make these immediately:
- Wooden Pickaxe — 3 Planks on top row + 2 Sticks in center column. This lets you mine stone.
- Wooden Sword — 2 Planks + 1 Stick vertically. Doubles your damage against mobs.
Now mine Cobblestone (grey stone) with your wooden pickaxe. Collect 20+ pieces, then upgrade:
- Stone Pickaxe — 3 Cobblestone + 2 Sticks. Mines faster and can mine iron.
- Stone Sword — Better damage than wooden.
- Stone Axe — Chops wood faster.
🏠 Minutes 5-8 — Build a Shelter
You MUST have a shelter before nightfall. The simplest options:
- Dirt hut — Dig into a hillside, seal the entrance with dirt. Ugly but effective.
- Wooden box — 5×5 Plank walls, 3 blocks high, with a door. Add a roof.
- Cave base — Find a cave entrance, seal the opening with blocks. Free shelter!
💡 Critical: Place Torches inside your shelter! Mobs spawn in darkness (light level 0). No torches = zombies spawning inside your own house. Craft torches: 1 Coal + 1 Stick = 4 Torches.

🌙 Your First Night — What to Do
Stay inside. Don't go exploring at night as a beginner. Instead, use the time to:
- Craft a Furnace — 8 Cobblestone in a ring. Smelt iron ore, cook food, make charcoal.
- Smelt Iron — If you found iron ore while digging, smelt it now. Iron tools are a huge upgrade.
- Make a Bed — 3 Wool (kill 3 sheep) + 3 Planks. Sleeping skips the night AND sets your respawn point.
- Cook Food — Raw meat in the furnace. Cooked food restores more hunger.
🍖 Food & Hunger System
Your hunger bar (drumstick icons) depletes as you move, sprint, and fight. When it hits 0, you start taking damage. Best early food sources:
- Cooked Porkchop / Steak — Best early food. Kill pigs/cows and cook the meat. Restores 8 hunger points.
- Bread — 3 Wheat in a row. Renewable once you have a farm.
- Baked Potato — Smelt a potato. Decent and easy to farm.
- Golden Apples — 8 Gold Ingots + Apple. Rare but gives absorption hearts. Save for emergencies.
⚔️ Dealing with Hostile Mobs
- Zombies — Slow, melee only. Swing and back up. Easy to kill.
- Skeletons — Shoot arrows. Use a shield to block (6 Planks + 1 Iron Ingot) or strafe behind cover.
- Creepers — The most dangerous early mob. They run toward you and EXPLODE. Sprint away when you hear the hiss. Kill from a distance if possible.
- Spiders — Fast, can climb walls. Neutral during the day (won't attack unless provoked).
- Endermen — Tall, dark, teleporting. DON'T look at their face (crosshair on their head). If you aggro one, stand under a 2-block-high roof — they're too tall to follow.

💎 What to Do After Night 1
- Mine iron — Go underground (Y level 0-63) and find iron ore. Make full iron tools and armor.
- Find diamonds — Dig to Y level -59 for the best diamond rates. See our Diamond Guide.
- Build a farm — Wheat, carrots, potatoes. Sustainable food forever.
- Enchant gear — Once you have diamonds, make an Enchanting Table. See our Enchantments Guide.
- Find the Nether — Build a Nether Portal (obsidian frame + flint & steel). Access Nether for blaze rods and ender pearls.
- Beat the Ender Dragon — The "final boss." Collect 12 Eyes of Ender, find the stronghold, enter the End dimension.
