Understand the Ladder
Dota 2's ranked system uses MMR (Matchmaking Rating) — a hidden number that determines your skill bracket. Medals (Herald to Immortal) are the visible representation. Winning ranked games gains MMR; losing loses it. This guide covers how it all works and how to climb. Track your stats at OpenDota.
🏅 Medal Tiers & MMR Ranges
📈 10 Tips to Gain MMR
- Spam 2-3 heroes. Hero pool mastery > playing 50 different heroes at average level.
- Focus on last-hitting. 10 more creeps per game = 500+ extra gold = faster items = more wins.
- Watch your replays. After a loss, watch the replay and find 1 mistake you made. Fix it next game.
- Don't play tilted. After 2 losses in a row, take a break. Tilted play loses 200-400 MMR in a night.
- Communicate with pings, not chat. Ping objectives, don't argue in all-chat.
- Pick meta heroes. Check our Hero Tier List and play what's strong.
- Buy BKB. In most core games, BKB is the most impactful item. Buy it earlier than you think.
- Ward as support — deward as everyone. Carrying Sentries isn't just for supports.
- Push objectives after wins. Won a teamfight? Push tower/Roshan immediately. Don't farm jungle.
- Play your best role consistently. Role queue exists for a reason. Don't random roles for variety.
