Age of Empires II Economy Guide — Master Resources & Build Orders (2026)

In Age of Empires II, the player with the strongest economy almost always wins. Whether you're playing competitive 1v1 or casual campaigns, understanding how to gather resources efficiently, when to advance to the next age, and how to balance your economy is the key to victory. This guide covers everything from basic villager management to advanced build orders.

• Food 🌾 — The most important resource early game. Needed for villagers, military units, and advancing through ages. Sources: sheep, boar, deer, berries, farms, fish.
• Wood 🪵 — Needed for buildings, farms, archers, and ships. Always keep 6-8 villagers on wood.
• Gold 🪙 — Required for most military units and technologies. Mines deplete — trade carts are your endgame gold source.
• Stone 🪨 — Used for castles, towers, and walls. Least used resource but critical for defensive strategies.

The "Fast Castle" is the most popular build order for new players. It gets you to Castle Age quickly (around 16–17 minutes) with a strong economy:

1. Villagers 1-6: Send to Sheep (build houses with 2 villagers first)
2. Villagers 7-10: Send to Wood (build a Lumber Camp)
3. Villager 11: Lure the first Boar to your Town Center
4. Villagers 12-13: Send to berries (build a Mill)
5. Villager 14: Lure the second Boar
6. Villagers 15-17: Send to Sheep/Boar under TC
7. Click Feudal Age at 28 population (27 villagers + 1 scout)
8. While advancing: Build 2 farms, move berry villagers to farms when berries run out
9. In Feudal: Build a Market + Blacksmith (required for Castle Age)
10. Click Castle Age — build a Town Center or siege workshop immediately

• Always queue villagers — Your Town Center should never be idle. Set a control group (Ctrl+1) and keep pressing Q.
• Push deer with your scout — Nudge deer toward your TC so villagers don't walk far. This saves hundreds of food early.
• Build multiple lumber camps — As trees get chopped, the walking distance increases. Build a new lumber camp every 5 minutes.
• Use the market in emergencies — You can buy and sell resources at the Market. The exchange rate gets worse with more trades.
