Essential Tips for Half-Life: Alyx

Whether you're playing in VR or using the NoVR mod, Half-Life: Alyx is a methodical, resource-scarce survival FPS. Ammo is limited, health items are rare, and every encounter is dangerous. This guide covers the tips, resin locations, weapon upgrade priority and combat strategies that the game doesn't tell you.

🧪 Tip 1 — Search Everything for Resin

Resin is the currency for weapon upgrades at Combine Fabricators. It's hidden everywhere — inside cabinets, behind boxes, on shelves, under staircases. The game does NOT highlight resin for you. Open every container, check every corner.

  • Typical hiding spots: drawers, open shelves, behind crates, inside broken washing machines, on top of tall furniture
  • Use your Gravity Gloves to pull resin from hard-to-reach places
  • There's enough resin for about 60-70% of all upgrades in a single playthrough — prioritize wisely
💎

🔫 Tip 2 — Weapon Upgrade Priority

You have three weapons: Pistol, Shotgun, and SMG. Upgrade in this order:

  1. Pistol — Reflex Sight (first upgrade) — Adds a laser dot sight. Dramatically improves accuracy. Get this ASAP.
  2. Shotgun — Autoloader — Speeds up reloading. The shotgun's biggest weakness is reload time.
  3. Pistol — Burst Fire — Three-round burst mode. Devastating at close-medium range.
  4. SMG — Reflex Sight — Improves accuracy for your spray weapon.
🏆

⚔️ Tip 3 — Combat Essentials

  • Headshots are critical. Combine soldiers take 2-3 headshots vs 5-8 body shots. Ammo is too scarce to waste on body shots.
  • Use cover religiously. Peek, shoot, duck back. Alyx is fragile — 3-4 hits and you're dead.
  • Throw objects at Headcrabs. Bottles, bricks, buckets — grab anything and throw it. Saves ammo and kills Headcrabs in one hit.
  • Barnacles are free kills. Throw an explosive barrel or propane tank into a Barnacle's tongue — it grabs it and explodes.
  • Gravity Gloves + grenade = overpowered. Pull enemy grenades out of the air and throw them back.
💼

🏥 Tip 4 — Health & Resources

  • Health stations are your only reliable healing. Memorize their locations — you'll want to backtrack to them after fights.
  • Syringes restore a small amount of health. Found in medical cabinets and first-aid boxes. Carry them.
  • Ammo is always scarce. Never spray. Every bullet counts. If you can kill something with a physics object instead of bullets, do it.
📈

😱 Tip 5 — The Jeff Chapter (Chapter 7)

Jeff is one of the most memorable gaming experiences in recent memory. It's a stealth chapter where you face a blind, unkillable creature that hunts by sound. Key rules:

  • Don't make noise. Don't shoot, don't break glass, don't knock over bottles.
  • Cover your mouth. Spore clouds make Alyx cough, alerting Jeff. Cover your mouth or avoid them.
  • Use thrown bottles to distract. Throw a bottle to make noise in one direction, then move the other way.
  • Jeff is not your enemy — noise is. Treat it like a puzzle, not a combat encounter.
